Cardiac Rehabilitation: What is your heart telling you?

Cardiac Rehabilitation

With the right support and rehabilitation, it is possible to halve your chance of another heart attack by the second year (following a cardiac event). We cater for over 50’s with a stable heart condition*, including:

  • Recent heart attack or heart surgery
  • Known coronary artery disease
  • Heart failure
  • Stable angina
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • High blood pressure, high cholesterol or other cardiovascular risk factors

We can design a Health Action Plan that incorporates a personal exercise program suitable for your cardiac condition.

We recommend most clients with a cardiac condition attend two exercise sessions per week. Prior to each session, we will assess your blood pressure and heart rate to ensure your safety and can prescribe your exercises at the right level.

A qualified clinician will attend the floor to answer your questions and offer support where required.  Cardiac & Pulmonary Exercise Sessions will also have a Cardiac Nurse on hand.

Where appropriate, your Health Action Plan may also suggest individual consults for Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, or Counselling, to help you get back on your feet and face the challenges associated with recovering from a cardiac episode or living with a heart condition.

From time to time we will also offer education sessions or workshops related to cardiac health, where you can ask questions about anything that worries you and receive support in a group setting. Topics can include:

  • Understanding your heart condition
  • Managing your heart condition
  • Medications for heart conditions
  • Exercise for heart conditions
  • Heart health diets
  • Coping with a chronic condition

*Please note, should your cardiac condition deteriorate to a level at which UQHL no longer feel we can safely support your exercise, we reserve the right to decline to continue service until such a time that we determine you are stable enough for us to continue to support you.

Your Health Action Plan will consider your personal circumstances and medical conditions when tailoring your care. In addition to a Personal Exercise Program and Cardiac & Pulmonary Exercise Classes, we may recommend education sessions relevant to those with a pulmonary condition. Topics may include:

  • Understanding your lung condition
  • Managing breathlessness
  • Secretion clearance techniques
  • Medications for lung conditions
  • Exercise for lung conditions
  • Coping with a chronic condition

Anyone over 50 with diabetes is eligible to attend our facility. This includes:

Your Health Action Plan will include a personal exercise program and we will always recommend those managing diabetes or pre-diabetes also undertake individual Dietetics consults, to help you understand:

  • Your personal triggers for eating
  • Appropriate portion sizes
  • Understanding misleading packaging

From time to time we will also offer education sessions relevant to diabetes, covering topics such as:

  • Safe & effective exercise with diabetes – how much, what sort?
  • Staying motivated, achieving your goals

Cancer Recovery: Let’s face this together

Cancer Recovery

Survival rates for cancer have increased by 20% in recent years. Logan Healthy Living offers valuable support for those facing the fight of their life or recovering from the battle. We can help you to feel better, manage the side effects of your treatment, and recover faster.

You may be familiar with the side effects of surgery, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. You may feel nauseas, develop mouth sores, or experience changes to your ability to taste. This may be making it difficult to eat or drink and causing you to lose weight. Alternatively, your treatments may be causing weight gain.

In addition to a personal exercise program, your Health Action Plan may recommend individual Dietetics consults to help you find ways to take on enough calories and essential nutrients every day, from meal plans and smoothies to low dose supplements, depending on your situation.

Your plan may also suggest education sessions, suited to cancer survivors or those caring for someone with cancer, where you are given the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive environment. Topics might include:

  • Managing common side effects of cancer treatments
  • Exercise, physical activity and cancer: When it seems impossible
  • Coping with a cancer diagnosis
